I think we've all heard the reference that when something is awesome it's the "next best thing since sliced bread." Why sliced bread? Why not fire or something else more important, like the printing press?

Because Sliced Bread is such an awesome invention. I mean, what CAN"T you do with sliced bread in an emergency? It can be a delicious foodstuffs!! It can hold your butter for you! It can be used to clean up minor spills! You can use it in magic tricks! You could (probably) write on it! In all seriousness, the guy who first sliced bread is a smart guy! Plus, bread wasn't always sliced...

I for one am of the opinion that sliced bread has had a minimal, if not detrimental, effect on the progress of civilisation. However, there wasn't really an answer for this and so I opted for 'Who is bread and why is he sliced?'

It's over-rated and makes people lazy. Pudding is the far superior invention.

Before sliced bread we were a bunch of godless heathens! Cutting our own bread we were mere cavemen! Now with sliced bread we are at the pinnacle of man's existence, all the creatures of the forest bow before our might. We live in exciting times, my friends...

Well, sliced bread by itself is kinda nasty, but you can toast it.... and butter it.....and put stuff in between two of them.
