Welcome! The RPG forum on here is the best place for that. You should like it here, it's very laid-back.

If you're hoping for inspiration this is the place. While talking about some whole other subject we made a story including all/most of the forum members that slowly and surely got out of hand. It finished the other day.
What are you writing a book about? Is it a novel?

Its a fictional book. It has the countries Baltija, Soviet Diminim, Federation of Kainim, Kalexion, kaleckton, Sav Russia (Just so happens Kalexion and Sav Russia are my inactive puppets at the moment) The first one i'm writing is called the Batijian Wars which has 3 chracters, Su, Robert, and Nike. Su is a 14 year old who is forcibly dragged by her 22 year old marine Boyfriend who she cannot get rid of no matter what she tries to do and is beaten and lied to. Then it goes to Robert who is part of the Youth Marine Corp which is a corperation that forces children from birth to join the military. He is a private who gains rank as the war goes on. He also finds the 22 year old marine and goes on to try to convince an absolutely beautiful 14 year old to leave the marine and go with him. Robert is 16 years old. Nike is a rebel 5 star General and as the war continues he tries to force the Baltijian army into retreat so that he can take Baltija over. Only one viewpoint of the characters will end up in the next book and 1 of the characters viewpoints die.

I'm writing a novel, too. It's set in a war between city-states Vitavale and Heraland, but is chiefly about the exploits of the crew of a Vitavalian cartographic ship.

Yea, I told some people about the 14 year old in my book and the reactions aren't very good from all sorts of people demanding me to change it, but they were just old teachers so I don't care. But the 14 year old is actually a problem I'm helping a girl to get out of at the moment. i put it in cause its actually a problem in the USA military and not very many people know it.

Sounds good to me. The problem I get with war stories is that I always get the urge to do some kind of Starship Troopers thing with explosions, battles, etc. Now the war in the story is really just the setting, not the main event (though it does influence the storyline a lot).

Well what I like to do is the person sees the battle, gets thrown into it, kinda confused but fights, moves through the lines, throw a few grenades, some air support, tanks, few other stuff. Then move on to something else. Doing battles all the times though is not a real smart move. The best bet is to have at the most 3 actually whole battles in a book and the most 10 part battles

I agree. In a slightly different way this is how The Lord of the Rings works; there's only a few major battles and the rest is either minor battles, side-adventures or, frankly, filler.

The best known fictional war books always work like that. Its because while action and war is fun, its gets boring after awhile since its not real life. If it was real life then it gets exciting, though not in the way it sounds.

The best war book I ever read was The Naked and The Dead by Norman Mailer. It's set on a pacific island in WW2, when the Americans are trying to take it from the Japanese. It's really well written, and gets into some brilliant detail while being unsparing when it comes to battle and everything. He actually spends the better part of a chapter describing the dead left on the battlefield being distorted by the heat.

Welcome here, kaleckton!I hope you will like this place!
All quiet on the western front, for me....Or Sven Hassel's wwII books. You can read one in 5 hours, it is exciting, but nothing more...

All Quiet... is more horrifying, but the first person narrative style just doesn't cut it for me. Plus, in Naked And The Dead Mailer takes you into everyone's thoughts.

The descriptions and the messages in the are similar to All Quiet. It gets a little hard to read towards the end (it has to be, because it's talking about extreme exhaustion in a jungle) but it's definitely worth it.
