Information on the borderlands of numnar

Founded just over 20 years ago the Borderlands of Numnar is a small but rapidly expanding nation. The various small nations that have since been unified shared a common identity. All the peoples of these nations believe that the continent that they live on was once unified by a mighty empire, however the rulers became soft and complacent this and the weakness of christianity allowed the empire to fall to barbarians. Only in the borderlands far from the capital did the old ways hang on, this meant that in this region the glory of Numnar remained. Using this semi-mythilogical history a unification movement sprang up at the turn of the twentieth century, by 1984 it had succeded in unifying the majority of the Borderlands (Erinmar the last province to join entered the union in 1998). The borderlands of numnar is now a modern industrialised nation with an unbridled desire to re-create the glory that it believes was once theirs.

The defence forces of numnar are small but well trained, well armed and highly motivated. They are also backed up by the large paramilitary police force and an extremely popular militia system.

The army is ~100,000 men and women strong spread between the various departments of the army (infantry, artillary, armour, air defence, support, etc).

The paramilitary police force numbers ~50,000 armed in the same way as the army but with less heavy equipment e.g. artillary, tanks, etc.

The militia has a strength somewhere between 500,000 and 1,500,000 members (there is some confusion due to some of them being under the command of different sections of the military machine). They are armed with various weapons (most of their equipment coming from pre unification military reserves) with little standardisation, however there have been recent moves to arm them with a standard rifle in the shape of the semi-automatic Bushmaster M17S in 5.8 calibre.

Major political groups

Movement for Unification (M.U.)
Founded around the begining of the 20th century this party still remains the major driving force in the Numnar political regime. As much a social movement as a political one the M.U. pervades every level of society within Numnar. M.U. militia, youth and social groups abound especially among the lower middle classes and more educated working class, as such the M.U. can call on a firm bedrock of support. However the M.U.'s commitment to greater equality, limited religious tollerance and isolationism has started to alienate sections of Numnar society.

Movement for Greater Unification (M.G.U.)
This party split from the M.U. in 2001, started by members who felt that it was not possible to alter the way the M.U. acted towards further expansion. It is popular among the youth of the nation, richer citizens and more moderate members of the military especially in the airforce and navy. Like the M.U. it to places much importance on social functions and has militia, youth and social groups, it is also very active within the universities. The main idea of the movement is that now that the borderlands have been unified the next step is the re-unification of the whole of the historical reach of Numnar.

Prosperity Through Might (P.T.M.)
An extremly militeristic group it has been called the political wing of the army by some of it's detractors. The main tenant of this group's policy is that the only way to make Numnar great is through complete militization of the population. This includes massive levels of conscription, permenant war economy and the abolition of democracy in favour of rule by quasi military governors. While a minority party the P.T.M. is a major issue mainly due to their willingness to act and their control over the army.

Progress Towards Glory (P.T.G.)
A highly religious party the P.T.G. is highly expansionist and incredibly bigoted. They believe that it is the right given by the gods for Numnorians to rule over Numnar and in more extreme cases the whole world.

Erinmar Liberation Party (E.L.P.)
This ilegal political organisation is the moderate wing of the Erinmar liberation movement. Since Erinmar was forceably incorporated into the unified Numnar resistance has grown to what many Erinmar citizens have begun to see as an armed occupation. It is unknown what links if any the E.L.P. has with the E.L.A. (Erinmar Liberation army)

Insurgent groups

E.L.A.
The Erinmar Liberation Army was founded shortly after the fall of Erinmar to Numnar forces. Started mainly by members of the armed forces who refused to lay down arms after the collapse of the Erinmar the E.L.A. has stabalised as a guerilla force of between 200 and 500 members along with an unknown number of non-combatant supporters. Armourment and training is haphazard with some units being made up of ex Erinmar special forces personal while some are worse off then the state militias and running the whole gammet between these two extremes.
